PHOREVER Research Presented at microTAS 2026 in Granada

PHOREVER research was recently presented at microTAS 2026, the 30th International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences, held in Granada, Spain.

During the conference, a poster entitled “Rapid isolation of extracellular vesicles from whole blood via sequential microfluidic tangential flow filtration for cancer screening” was presented, showcasing ongoing work carried out within the EU-funded PHOREVER Project.

As part of PHOREVER, CSEM is developing the microfluidic sample-preparation front end of the project’s photonic multi-sensing platform, which aims to support the early detection of pancreatic cancer and stroke.

The presented approach uses a cascade of tangential-flow filtration membranes to isolate extracellular vesicles (EVs) directly from whole blood. The method is being investigated as a faster and more streamlined alternative to conventional centrifugation-based protocols, contributing to the development of an integrated workflow suitable for PHOREVER’s future diagnostic platform.

The presentation provided an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas with researchers and experts from the microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip communities and to discuss the potential of advanced sample-preparation technologies for next-generation biomedical diagnostics.

This work is the result of collaboration between CSEM, the Bioanalytics Group at ETH Zürich, and the wider PHOREVER consortium. Special thanks go to Professor Petra Dittrich and Professor Edwin van der Pol for supervising the work.

Following the encouraging discussions at microTAS 2026, the research now continues in the laboratory, with the preparation of the full scientific paper as the next milestone.

Stay tuned for more updates from PHOREVER as we continue developing innovative photonic and microfluidic technologies for earlier and more effective disease detection.
